Ten-year-old child wandered streets while mom was at bar

Jessica Lea Simmons (Wapello Co. Sheriff)

A St. Patrick’s Day celebration leaves an Ottumwa woman facing Child Endangerment charges.

Jessica Lea Simmons, 27, of Ottumwa, was arrested on March 18 for child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor.

The criminal complaint alleges that around 10 p.m. on March 17, Simmons’s 10-year-old child was found by another person wandering around the neighborhood alone with no way to contact Simmons.

When Simmons finally arrived at the police station to pick up the child, she was clearly intoxicated.

The complaint alleges that Simmons admitted this wasn’t the first time she left the child alone to go to a bar.

Simmons was released after posting a $2,000 bond. Court records don’t indicate when her next court appearance is scheduled.
