It's official. Kirksville's planned dog park now has a name.
The roadside park along South Franklin Street will be called "McKinney Bark Park."
The park will be named after honoree, Rich McKinney of Kirksville.
McKinney Bark Park will be located at the site of the current roadside Park in Kirksville.
McKinney attained this honor through his advocacy for a dog park and thanks to an anonymous donation to raise funds for the construction of the park.
McKinney says naming the park after him is more than he ever expected.
â??It is indeed a great honor. Iâ??m just very pleased because I wasn't born in Kirksville, but this is my second time to live in Kirksville. I hope they [the community] don't think so much about my name, but instead the whole purpose of the dog park,â?? said McKinney.
The dog park committee has planned a Dog Jog fundraiser for Saturday, May 3, at Brashear Park. The public is invited to attend.
The group has almost reached it goal of $20,000 so that construction can get underway in the coming weeks.
The city is paying the other half of the dog park construction costs.
