A Sullivan County couple and their son are in jail, after being arrested on warrants for helping cover up a murder in Tennessee.
According to the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, Maira Gregoria Artola, 53, and Carlos Alberto Artola, 52, of Milan, Mo., along with their son, Juan Carlos Artola, 28, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, were arrested Wednesday in Milan, Mo. They are charged with one felony count each of accessory after the fact, tampering with or fabricating evidence and filing a false report.
A news release issued by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation indicates that the Artolas allegedly helped cover up a murder that took place in Carthage, Tenn. back in 2007. The murder suspect, Carlos Martin Artola, is the son and brother of the three arrested and remains a fugitive.
According to the news release, Carlos Martin Artola, allegedly killed the victim, Alvaro Guadelupe Gonzalez, in his home on April 29, 2007. The murder happened after Artola discovered that his wife was having an affair with Gonzalez.
Maira, Carlos Alberto, and Juan Artola are being held in the Davies/DeKalb Regional Jail on $17,500 cash-only bonds.
Sullivan County Sheriff Roger Smiley said the murder happened before the couple moved to Milan, Mo. According to Smiley, all three have waived extradition and are awaiting transportation to Smith County, Tennessee. ??
