Fire crews responded to a train engine fire near La Plata, Mo. Tuesday afternoon. The call came in around 2:30 p.m. The burning train was on the tracks east of La Plata near the intersection of Mockingbird Hill Lane and Cambridge Lane.
Only the engine car of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train was involved in the fire. The locomotive was not transporting any other cars. Crews at the scene told Adair County Sheriff Robert Hardwick they believed the cause of the fire was either mechanical or electrical.
"We responded along with all other EMS. Currently the rural fire departments are putting it out and putting foam on it. It's a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train. We are here, they are working behind the scenes here to put it out," said Sheriff Hardwick.
After the fire was put out, the train engine was transported by another BNSF train to the depot in La Plata where it will undergo further investigation.
No injuries related to the incident were reported.
