As Ottumwa cleans up after the storm, residents with smaller amounts of tree debris can place those items out for the weekly curbside yard waste collection. Leafy debris and sticks may be disposed of in the Ottumwa/Wapello brown paper yard waste bags. The bags cost $1 each and are available at most grocery stores.
Brush and tree limbs must be properly prepared to be collected curbside. Remember the "3-3-50" standard; limbs under three inches in diameter, cut into lengths no more than three feet and tied into bundles no more than fifty pounds.
To ensure curbside collection, place yard waste at the curb by 4 a.m. on the day of collection. Yard waste may not be disposed of with general trash in your trash cart. Curbside Yard Waste collection south of the Des Moines River is on Tuesdays; collection north of the river is on Thursdays.
The curbside program is not intended for large amounts of debris or disposal of entire trees.
All sizes of yard waste may also be disposed of at no charge at the Ottumwa/Wapello Landfill. The Landfill is open 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 7:00 a.m. to Noon on Saturdays. All loads going to the Landfill must be covered.
