An incident that started in Kirksville led to a standoff at a Heartland cemetery Sunday.
Sullivan County Sheriff Roger Smiley said his office was alerted by the Kirksville Police Department that a man from Kirksville was at the Greencastle Cemetery threatening to harm himself.
The sheriff says, during the incident, the man fired his gun into the air twice. The weapon was not pointed at anyone, and no threats were made. A trained negotiator was called in to talk with the man, who was crouched behind a tombstone, not far from his vehicle. The incident started late Sunday afternoon. The man gave himself up about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
There were no injuries. Smiley said the man is not facing any charges in the incident. Kirksville police were called as mutual aid for Sullivan County. Also at the scene were the Adair County Sheriff's Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
