A bizarre chain of events involving a runaway truck and a car parked in a garage left two people injured over the weekend.

It happened at 1 p.m. Saturday on West Harrison Street at Worth Street in Brunswick.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said it all started when Anton Gerke, 46, of Brunswick, was loading a car onto a trailer attached to a pickup truck.

Troopers said that is when the pickup jumped out of gear and traveled down a hill.

A pedestrian, Patricia Gerke, 58, of Brunswick, tried to get in the runaway pickup to apply the brakes.

As she did that, the open door of the truck hit a utility pole causing Gerke to fall to the street.

The pickup then continued downhill and traveled off the roadway and through the side of a garage where it struck a parked car inside.

Patricia Gerke suffered serious injuries. Anton Gerke had moderate injuries.

Both were flown to University Hospital in Columbia for treatment.
