If you're looking for volunteer opportunities or a way to give back this holiday season, the Leisure Lounge Senior Center in Albia is looking for you.
Every year, the center hosts a Christmas dinner for senior citizens and their families. They're always in need of volunteers to help with set-up, deliveries and clean up. The dinner has been a tradition since the early 1990's and is a community-wide effort that spreads Christmas cheer to all involved.
"I feel that it's a community [event], you know, the volunteers coming from all parts of the county and we do serve the meals here in Albia," said Doris Mellick, one of the dinner's volunteers. "It's the true meaning of Christmas, everybody gives up their time and effort to help those receive."
Mellick said set-up is usually between 7 and 8 a.m. on Christmas morning, meals start to be packed for delivery around 11 a.m. and guests are seated and served between 11:30 a.m .and noon.
The dinner is sponsored each year by the Iowa State Bank in Albia, and if you're interested in volunteering, you can contact Loren Pence at the bank at 932-2144.
