For Iowans, summertime means it's county fair time.
Preparations were underway Wednesday for the Wapello County Fair, one of the first fairs of the summer.
The carnival was getting set up Wednesday afternoon and volunteers were logging entries for Wapello Hall and the Iowa Ag building. Preparing for the fair is a lot of hard work, but the fair board recognizes that it is a tradition that needs to continue, and it wouldn't be able to do so without the help of volunteers.
"All of the volunteers work year-round, really, to keep the grounds up," said Beverly Sloan, Fair Board Secretary. "We have people mowing, we have them picking up trash, the buildings are all painted by volunteers, we've had some high school kids that come for community service, which helps us out a lot."
Events kickoff Thursday at noon with harness racing. Then later in the day is the Queen Contest, golf cart racing and pie and quilt auctions. Saturday is kid's day, where everything is free for kids.
Sloan said they will try not to cancel any events due to weather, but if rain does cause a problem, they will make an announcement online.
