Dozens of people in the community took the opportunity to Make Ottumwa Shine.
The annual event kicked off April 28th and ended on May 4th. Volunteers helped picked up trash at sites around town. Project Coordinator Jodi Gates from the Ottumwa Health Department says the community clean-up has been taking place for over a decade. Organizers of Make Ottumwa Shine say the turnout wasn't as large as most years, possibly due to the cooler temperatures.
??We had a devoted group of volunteers,?? Health and Inspections Director Jodi Gates said. ??We had more than 25 areas that were adopted and cleaned up and we still have some groups now that are going to be cleaning up this week and there were probably more than 60 volunteers.??
Gates hopes next year they can attract more even more volunteers. She encourages people to pick up liter year-round. Purple bags are available at the city health department in room 204 of City Hall.
