The Southeast Iowa Kidney Walk kicked off in Ottumwa Saturday morning.
Dozens of people met under the Jimmy Jones Shelter to not only get some exercise, but also to spread awareness of kidney disease, and raise money to help people fighting the illness. According to statistics from members of the National Kidney Foundation, 1 in 9 Americans suffer from kidney disease, and over 400 people in Iowa are currently waiting on the kidney transplant list.
"We each have a personal story, but I found out I had kidney disease when I was 20, when I went to actually donate a kidney to a friend, so I would have never known I had kidney disease, but now that I know, I've gotten very involved before and that's why this walk is important to me." Jamie Scott, organizer said.
Event organizers say if you didn't make it out to the walk, you can still make a donation online.
