The Wapello County Supervisors will declare April as Child Abuse Prevention Month at their board meeting on Tuesday.

Supervisor Greg Kenning says it's important for people to understand issues surrounding child abuse.

Figures from the Iowa Department of Human Services show there were over 600 cases of child abuse and neglect reported in Wapello County in 2010, 2011 and 2012. At Tuesday's meeting, the supervisors will pass a resolution recognizing the awareness month.

"So that's basically what this is, making people aware that there are certain external factors that can weigh into child abuse aside from the things that are most intuition about it, so that's one of the things that we're gonna try to make join forces with other community groups and making people aware of child abuse prevention," Kenning said,

The supervisors plan to meet at 9:30 Tuesday morning in the third floor meeting room of the Wapello County Courthouse.
