An information technology director has been hired to re-organize computers, technology and phone and internet service for Wapello County.
Last week, the Board of Supervisors approved the hire of Paul Culver, of Spencer, Iowa, to the position. The decision follows a visit from IT directors in other counties to the Ottumwa area, who reported that hiring one person in charge of each technology-related aspects within all departments would save the county between $100,000 and $300,000 a year.
Steve Sigel of the Wapello County Board of Supervisors said Culver was hired based on his extensive experience and personality.
"We were looking for somebody who really, I guess my top priority was somebody who would bring us the savings that this report talked about and knew a lot about computers and systems," Sigel said. "And also phones and purchasing power and those kinds of things."
The hiring of Culver was approved by a two-to-one vote and the position will be a permanent one with the county.
Culver begins in the position starting September 3.
