According to NeighborhoodScout.com, the city of Kirksville's crime index is 23. This means the city is safer than 23 percent of the other cities in the United States.
Valinda Terrell, manager of Travelers Hotel Apartments, says sheâ??s rarely concerned about crime in Kirksville.
â??Iâ??ve lived here for 14 years. I feel like itâ??s a pretty safe town. We definitely have some crime, but itâ??s pretty much minor. Itâ??s not the extreme murders,â?? said Terrell.
However, the downtown area where Terrellâ??s office is located has been reported as Kirksvilleâ??s unsafest area.
â??We personally donâ??t have issues with any type of crime. I have not had problems where Iâ??ve had to call the police or had issues with theft or things happening to my residentsâ?? belongings or cars. We have had a few isolated incidents, but nothing major,â?? said Terrell.
According to the Adair County Sheriffâ??s Office, the crime index may be a result of repetitious behavior.
â??Weâ??ve housed 325 people at the jail from January to April 30th. There have been 164 inmates from other counties. From January to April, weâ??ve housed 35 individuals that are being brought to the jail more than once.â??
So, the question many are asking isâ?¦ how did NeighborhoodScout.com get the crime index number?
â??I feel safe living hereâ?¦,â?? said couple business owners in downtown Kirksville.
â??I feel like weâ??re lucky we donâ??t have a huge crime rate, living in cities like St. Louis and other areas. Obviously locking your car doors and taking simple precaution would help to keep that at bay," said Terrell.
