Weekend scuffle with police lands man in jail

Charles Klingsmith is charged with felony counts of assault of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

One person is in custody following a weekend incident involving a scuffle with a Unionville Police officer.

Charles Klingsmith, 61, of Unionville, is charged with felony counts of assault of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. He is being held in the Davies-DeKalb Regional Jail under $30,000 bond.

According to court records, the Unionville officer responded to a report of a man threatening suicide. When the officer attempted to take Klingsmith into custody, he went to his vehicle. The officer sprayed him with pepper spray, but Klingsmith was able to start the car, shift into reverse and hit the police car. The officer broke out the window of the car when he shifted into drive and sprayed him again.

Klingsmith took off, leading the officer on a pursuit through several yards, before the vehicle stopped and he was taken into custody.

Charles Klingsmith was arraigned Monday in Putnam County Associate Circuit Court. His next court date is set for August 27.
