Weeklong beautification of Ottumwa approaching

Get those trash bags ready Ottumwans. It's almost time to make your community shine.

Make Ottumwa Shine Week will be held May 12th through May 17th.

The Make Ottumwa Shine Committee met today as they finalize plans for the weeklong beautification.

The event is a volunteer-driven, community clean up program with a goal to empower citizens to make the community attractive and clean.

Keeping business districts clean is an important aspect to making Ottumwa shine.

These areas of the city are the most visited by Ottumwans and out of town visitors.

Making Ottumwa shine is more than just a weeklong event.

"We want to really get people to think about this as being a year-round project," said Ottumwa Mayor Tom Lazio. "Jody Gates from our health department has some really great ideas, and we're going to be doing some more projects throughout the summer. But we want to make a real kickoff to getting the clean picked up."

The city is looking for volunteers to adopt streets, parks, trails, and streams by pledging to keep them clean.
