The American Red Cross is asking a favor of all eligible blood donors.
Across the country, approximately 300 blood drives in 25 different states have been cancelled this year, due to harsh weather conditions. The cancellations have resulted in about 9,000 blood and platelet donation shortages since January 2nd, with 800 supply shortages here in the Missouri-Illinois region.
Julie Pipes with the American Red Cross says instances like these are inevitable, so the community's support is needed.
â??Well everyday, we work hard to assure that the blood products are available for patients when they need it. We have blood drives scheduled with wonderful organizations each and every day, but mother nature throws us a curve ball though and fortunately we have tremendous donors who support our blood program and will come out and donate,â?? said Pipes.
There is a current shortage in O-positive and negative, A-negative and B-negative types. If you'd like to schedule an appointment to donate blood or platelets to the American Red Cross, call 1-800-red-cross or click here.
