Wrong-way crash on Highway 36 kills driver
NEAR ANABEL, Mo. —
A northeast Missouri driver is dead after he drove the wrong way on a Heartland highway.
The deadly wreck happened just after 5:15 p.m. Monday on Highway 36 near Anabel, Missouri, five miles east of Macon.
It backed up traffic for miles in the westbound lanes.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol identifies the victim as Albin Covington, 84, of Shelbyville, Missouri.
Troopers said Covington was eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 36 when his pickup truck collided head-on with a minivan driven by Katelynn Sizemore, 17, of Clarence, Missouri.
Both vehicles came to rest in the roadway.
Covington was pronounced dead at Samaritan Hospital in Macon.
Sizemore suffered serious injuries and was flown to a Columbia hospital for treatment.
The online crash report states that both drivers were wearing a seat belt.
