Zombie Apocalypse comes to Kirksville

Kirksvilleâ??s first ever Zombie Apocalypse 5K was hosted by Preferred Family Healthcare to raise awareness about prescription drug abuse and misuse.

You might have noticed a zombie invasion in Kirksville Saturday morning, and a few walkers and runners dodging the gruesome creatures too.

It was all for the Kirksvilleâ??s first ever Zombie Apocalypse 5K. The race was hosted by Preferred Family Healthcare in order to raise awareness about prescription drug abuse and misuse.

All proceeds will go towards a special family strengthening workshop to be held during Red Ribbon Week in October.

Since this was the first year for the event, organizers were happy to see things run so smoothly.

â??I was really nervous this morning getting everything set up just wondering if it was going to turn out like I had planned, and my volunteers have really done an excellent job of bringing it together and I'm at ease now, and now that they're actually running now I'm ok,â?? said race organizer Justin McDermott.

A prescription drug take back was held in conjunction with Saturdayâ??s race.

Sheriff Robert Hardwick reminds all residents that prescription drugs can also be dropped off at the Adair County Sheriff's office weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding holdiays.
