It is a challenge you may want to back down from.

There are more than 750,000 YouTube videos daring you to take the â??Cinnamon Challenge.â?? Everyone from the Governor of Illinois to Kim Kardashian is taking the Cinnamon Challenge.

Whatâ??s the challenge? You have to swallow a tablespoon of ground cinnamon in 60 seconds without drinking. While it looks like it is just a silly dare, it is more dangerous than it appears.

Dr. Randy Tobler Chief Medical Officer at Scotland County Hospital said taking the challenge can potentially cause extensive lung damage. â??Doctors are worried about it because kids are harming themselves with this,â?? Dr. Tobler said. â??Theyâ??re showing up to the emergency rooms with lungs that are blown out because if you've seen the videos thereâ??s just a tremendous amount of coughing and gagging and in that process they can blow a hole in the lining of their lung.â??

The American Association of Poison Control Center said calls related to the Cinnamon Challenge have tripled within the last few months.

â??The chemical in cinnamon and while it may be good on a top of a cookie mix with some sugar it can be very, very damaging not only to the swallowing tube, but to the nasal passages,â?? Dr. Tobler said. â??They're seeing nose bleeds, but also to the breathing tubes.â??

Doctor Tobler said there is a better way to get some attention. â??I think if kids want some attention (they should) eat their broccoli, eat their cauliflower and get some attention because they're strong and healthy and donâ??t have to go to the doctor,â?? Dr. Tobler said.

The report found that in 2011, the American Association of Poison Control Centers received 51 calls related to the cinnamon challenge. In the first six months of 2012, the number of calls rose to 178. Thirty of those incidents were serious enough to require medical attention.
