Lois Munden, 87, of Unionville, MO, Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home

Lois Munden, 87, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, MO, on Wednesday, April 11, 2017, after a brief stay.

Lois Ann (Smith) Munden was born in Mason City, IA, on July 18, 1929, the daughter of Pearl A. and Geneva G. (Giest) Smith, who preceded her in death. Lois moved with her family to Putnam County as a child. She graduated from Unionville High School in 1947. Lois married Basil Junior Munden on June 8, 1947, and he preceded her in death on January 29, 1994.

Lois and Junior began married life in Unionville, but soon moved to a farm east of town. Lois and Junior were entrusted with the care of Lois’ brother, Jim Smith, soon after the death of their father. Jim was nine years old at the time and Lois raised him until his High School graduation.

Lois took pride in her work. She began as an 11 year old washing dishes at the Freeborn Café in Unionville. She later worked as a telephone operator, which she really enjoyed, at McGraw-Edison in Centerville, IA, and at Don’s Hickory House where she enjoyed working with her sister Dorothy. Lois retired as a cook at the Putnam County Care Center.

Lois accepted Christ as her Savior when she was a teenager. She was active at First Baptist Church in Unionville for a number of years and enjoyed the fellowship of the Fern Harrington Circle. She loved to read mystery and suspense novels. Lois was a good cook and liked to have a clean house. She was organized and efficient in her manner. She loved her family and kept close to each and every one of them. She especially loved going on vacation with her kids and grandkids.

Lois is survived by her two children, Janet Shenefield of Unionville, MO, and Brian (Bonnie) Munden of Livonia, MO. Her surviving grandchildren are Lynnette Hicks, Cara (Todd) Vice, Bradley (Angela) Munden, and Shawna (George) Head. She is survived by 15 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Dorothy Myre of Chesterfield, MO, and Nancy (Bill) Cummins of Unionville, MO, and one brother, Jim (Fay) Smith of Tucson, AZ. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents and husband, Lois was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Matthew Brown and Christopher Brown, three sisters, Maxine Osterberg, Stella Maulsby McFarland, and Donna Fisher, and a grandson-in-law, David Hicks.

Funeral services for Lois Munden will be at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 14, 2017, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Unionville Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Broadlawn Baptist Church and may be entrusted with Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
