Truman State women's basketball falls to Vanguard
In another see-saw affair in California, it was Vanguard (Calif.) University that got the big three-pointer late and the third-ranked Lions defeated the Bulldogs 65-57 in the final game of the California Baptist University Classic.
Truman will be off until December 31st when they host Mount Mercy (Iowa) at 1:30 p.m.
The Lions (7-0) outscored the Bulldogs 12-2 over the final 3:28 to break open a game that featured 14 lead changes and nine ties.
With Truman (7-2) up two and under four to play, Allie Norton grabbed a rebound with a defender on her back.
As she was trying to regain her balance, Chelsea Alfafara stole the ball and drove in for a lay-up to tie the game at 55 apiece.
Ester Timmermans, who finished with 17 points, got a go ahead basket with 2:45 remaining and Alfafara delivered a knockout blow with a baseline three-pointer with the shot clock winding down and a minute to go to put the Lions up seven.
Nicole Ballestero led the Lions with 19 points but Vanguard shot just 37% from the field.
The Lions were able to take advantage of 17 Truman turnovers while limiting their own turnovers to just six.
Norton rained down four threes for the Bulldogs to finish with a dozen points and Amy Briggs and Becka McHenry each added 11.
Nicole Gloor finished 5-of-6 from the floor for 10.
The Bulldogs also shot 37% from the floor and were 7-of-22 from outside.
