The St. Louis Cardinals have honored Bob Gibson and other members of their 1964 team that beat the New York Yankees in the World Series.
There was a ceremony at Busch Stadium on Monday before the Cardinals hosted the Yankees in the opener of an interleague series. More than a dozen members of that championship team were on hand.
Gibson threw the ceremonial first pitch from halfway between the plate and the mound. Longtime catcher Tim McCarver was on the receiving end.
Gibson was the winning pitcher in Game 7 of the 1964 World Series. Gibson, outfielder Lou Brock and Red Schoendienst, a coach on that team, are in the Hall of Fame.
