Senior Colton Schmitz was selected to the first-team of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic squad.
Junior Nick Shea was a second team choice and Will Evans, Luke Knoche, Alec Rentschler and Chase Wrisinger were honorable mention. Truman's 3.31 team grade-point average was calculated by averaging 10 wrestlers from the team, eight of which must have competed in the NCAA Super Regional qualifying tournament.
It was the fifth-best team GPA trailing California Baptist (3.37), Western State (Colo.) (3.36), Seton Hill (Pa.) (3.35) and Indianapolis (3.33). The Bulldogs, under the direction of Coach David Schutter, have been in the top five 11 times with six Academic National Championships.
Truman won four straight from 2007-10 and were second in both 2011 and 2012. Schmitz concluded his Bulldog career with a 95-48 career record and a 25-12 mark during his senior season.
It is Schmitz's second straight year earning first-team status and was a second-team selection in 2011.
He finishes eighth on Truman's career all-time wins list. He has a 3.58 GPA while majoring in Exercise Science. Shea was a second-team selection following an honorable mention last year.
Shea was 8-3 this season and has a career record of 26-18. He has a 3.57 GPA while majoring in Exercise Science. Evans earned his second honorable mention with the previous coming in 2012.
He was 0-7 this season and 1-21 for his career. Evans is a Classics major with a 3.53 GPA . Knoche posted a 1-6 record this past season and has a 6-17 overall mark.
It is his first year on the All-Academic list and has a 3.39 GPA in Exercise Science. Rentschler has twice been an honorable mention All-Academic performer.
He had a 16-17 record while starting at 197-pounds and a 42-53 career mark.
Rentschler has a 3.12 GPA while majoring in History. Wrisinger was the sixth Bulldog, fourth named honorable mention.
He had a 14-16 season record and 19-35 in his career. He has a 3.15 GPA in Agricultural Science. The Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team consists of 181 student-athletes from 38 universities and colleges.
There were 47 first-team selections, 39 second-team and 95 honorable mentions.
To qualify, a student-athlete needs a minimum of a 3.0 grade-point average, be in his second full year at school, a varsity team member or key reserve, demonstrate a degree of skill and have two letters of recommendation.
