Senior Colton Schmitz has advanced to day two of the NCAA Division II Central region after picking up a pair of wins on Friday.
Schmitz will begin his day battling Lindenwood's Derrick Weller in a consolation quarterfinal match. Schmitz avenged an earlier defeat at the hands of Fort Hays State's Mitchell Means by a 6-2 score in the first round but was sent into the wrestlebacks following a 4-2 decision loss at the hands of eighth-ranked Bobby Williams of Ouachita Baptist (Ark.).
Schmitz bounced back with a fall win over Brennan Johnson from Central Missouri to set up a rematch with Weller.
The two met at the MIAA Championships two weeks ago with Lindenwood's junior defeating Schmitz 3-1.
The winner gets a trip to the semis and a shot at a top five placing. While Schmitz's career continues, another storied career came to an end. All-American Ryan Maus saw his Bulldog tenure closed out when he was defeated twice.
Maus lost in his first match 9-5 to Augustana's Shawn Hatlestad. Maus stormed back with a first period pin over Newman's Zach Duwe but was defeated next by the University of Mary's Trevor Johnson. Maus finishes with 98 career wins, three trips to the NCAA Nationals with a third-place finish under his belt. Devon Fenstermaker and Chase Wrisinger picked up some wins for the Bulldogs before having their tournaments come to an end.
Fenstermaker had two wins in the pigtail round before being dealt a 5-3 loss to Minnesota State's Darick Vencura while Wrisinger was pinned in round three. The first three Bulldogs to take the mats had a rough draw as Jabez Zinabu, Rafael Lopez and Mark Smith all had nationally-ranked opponents in their first matches.
All three, including Ryan Ward, Helmut Rentschler and Ben Dudley were eliminated from the tournament in two matches.
