Good weekend for Truman State womens tennis
The Truman Women's Tennis team traveled to the University of Indianapolis for the USTA/ITA Women's Midwest Regional Tournament. Kelsey Porter, Savannah Everett and Marisa Thome all advanced to the quarterfinal round of the "B" Singles bracket.
Porter won three matches in the draw winning, the first two in straight sets. In the quarterfinal match against Saginaw Valley's Ashley Giordano,
Porter rallied after being blanked in the first set 6-0, to win 6-0 and take the tie breaker 10-2. However in the semifinals, Porter dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Grand Valley State's Kelly Trapp.
Everett and Thome both advanced to the quarters before being ousted. Everett won her first match 6-0, 6-0 then pulled out a 6-0, 1-6 (10-3) win before falling 6-0, 6-0.
Thome shutout Abby Kayser of Rockhurst in her opening match then won 7-6, 6-2 over Indianapolis' Kasey Land.
She lost a third set tie break to Ashland's Meghann Fitzpatrick.
Thome and Hannah Runez bounced back to win the B doubles consolation bracket.
They lost 8-6 in their first match but reeled off 8-0 and 8-5 wins to take the draw. Everett and Porter also had success in the B doubles consolation and were a 9-7 loss away from facing Thome and Runez in the finals.
Kim Birenbaum and Jessica Gennuso tried to accomplish a similar feat in the A doubles consolation bracket after dropping their first match 8-2.
The duo were victors in their next two matches but lost 9-7 to have their tournament come to an end.
The four Truman singles players in the A draw did not fare as well as all four were eliminated in two matches.
Gennusso lost a three set match while Katie Austin lost her opening contest in three.
The men's and women's teams are scheduled for three dual to close out the fall season this week.
The teams will be in Fulton on Tuesday to face Westminster, St. Louis on Thursday for a date with Missouri Baptist and a home match on Saturday morning against Qioncy.
