Kevin Kanaskie steps down as Ottumwa basketball coach
Ottumwa, Iowa —
After four years in Ottumwa, Ottumwa High School boys head basketball coach Kevin Kanaskie is stepping down.
He has accepted a teaching position in Waukee for the 2017-18 school year.
Kanaskie has enjoyed his time in Ottumwa.
“The kids played hard and were very coachable,” Kanaskie said. “We’ve beaten every team we’ve played at least once with the exception of Hoover.”
He sees promise for the program in the future.
“There are a lot of returning players.”
He was also part of revamping the Ottumwa Youth Basketball League (OYBL) and increased the number of travel teams.
"I appreciate Kevin's dedication to the basketball program at all levels, as well as his work as a PE/health instructor at OHS," said Mike Egbert, athletic director. "I wish him the best of luck in Waukee."
“Coach Kanaskie brought a level of expertise and intensity to Ottumwa basketball that we haven't seen for a long time," said OHS principal Mark Hanson. "He got a lot of mileage out of his players and demanded 100% out of them at all times. I'm sad to see him go but wish him well."
Kanaskie will also miss his coaching staff, who worked hard to support his efforts.
He plans to continue coaching.
