Two champions and several place showing opened the year for the Truman Wrestling team on Saturday.
Seniors Ryan Maus and Colton Schmitz dominated their weight classes en route to bringing home individual titles for the Bulldogs. Maus won by fall in his opening match in the 149-pound bracket then reeled off an 11-0, and 9-0 victories to reach the finals.
Against Hannibal-LaGrange's Tyler Sonnabend, Maus claimed a 17-5 major win for the championship. Schmitz pounded out four victories en route to his title.
He had a pinfall win in match one followed by two 6-0 wins before taking the bracket by disqualification. The third Bulldog seeded on top of their respective bracket was Helmut Rentschler at 197.
Rentschler started the season with a tech fall win followed by an 11-1 major victory and a 6-0 win to reach the finals.
He was downed by Central (Iowa) Tyler Lowry by fall. Other placers for the Bulldogs were Jabez Zinabu (5th/125), Rafael Lopez (3rd/133), Nick Shea (4th/141), Andrew Still (6th/141), Devon Fenstermaker (4th/165), Chase Wrisinger (3rd/174) and Ryan Ward (3rd/184). The Bulldogs will open up the home dual season on Thursday when they host Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.)
