Softball Smacks Upper Iowa with Doubleheader Sweep

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - Andrea Klipschâ??s sixth-inning solo blast to right-center broke a 7-7 tie and helped send the Truman softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Upper Iowa University on Saturday afternoon in the 2013 home opener. The Bulldogs won the opening game 13-5 in six innings before finishing with an 8-7 win in game two.Although the temperature hovered in just the mid-30s throughout much of the afternoon, the Bulldog (12-4) bats were scorching against Upper Iowa (11-7), as Truman pounded out 26 hits in 11+ innings of hitting, belted five home runs and slugged .729 in the two games. The Bulldogs wasted no time jumping all over the Peacocks in game one, as Kristin Grossman (Glen Ellyn, Ill., Glenbard South) blasted a three-run shot in the first, before she, Liz Leath (St. Charles, Mo., Francis Howell Central) and Kelsey Bollman (Maquoketa, Iowa, Maquoketa) all added RBI base hits in the second for four more runs. After UIU scored an unearned run in the top of the third, Laura Miller (Columbia, Mo., Hickman) â?? who narrowly missed a three-run shot in the 2 nd - connected on her first career grand slam in the third to put Truman on top 11-1 through three. UIU would fight back with four in the fourth, but a Meredith Kusky (Ballwin, Mo., Nerinx Hall) groundout in the bottom half precluded a Andrea Klipsch (St. Louis, Mo., Lindbergh) walk-off, run-rule RBI single in the sixth to give Truman the 13-5 win. Hannah Washburn (Keokuk, Iowa, Keokuk) earned win No. 7, throwing a complete game and striking out five. Five different Bulldogs tallied multiple hits in the game. The nightcap took on a different script, as Upper Iowa jumped on the board with a run in the top of the first before Leath drove home Bollman with an RBI single in the bottom half. However, the Peacocks would get single tallies in the second and third to lead 3-1 before Grossmanâ??s second 3-run blast of the day gave Truman a 4-3 lead. Bollman would add an RBI single in the fourth to make it a 5-3 game in front of Klipsch's first homer of the year in the next at-bat for a 7-3 Bulldog edge. However, UIU recovered with a four-run inning of its own, knotting the score at seven, before Klipsch lasered a line drive just over the right-center field fence in the bottom of the sixth for an 8-7 Truman lead. Kirsten Krause (St. Louis, Mo., Parkway North) who entered in relief in the fifth, shut down the Peacocks in order in the seventh to pick up her third win of the year, as she struck out two and did not allow an earned run.Leath (.750; 6-for-8), Klipsch (.714; 5-for-7), Danielle Lewellen (.600; 3-for-5), Grossman (.571; 4-for-7) and Bollman (.500; 3-for-6) all saw their season averages raise significantly following the dayâ??s production, as Truman is now hitting .342 as a unit this season with 39 stolen bases in 42 attempts. Danielle Lewellen (Kirksville, Mo., Kirksville) led all players with a 4-for-4 day on the basepaths. The Bulldogs travel to future GLVC-foe Missouri-St. Louis on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader at 2:00 pm.
