Truman drops series to Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. â?? Missouri Southern picked up the series win over the Truman Baseball team on Sunday with a 15-8 victory in the finale. Truman is slated to host Lindenwood (Mo.) University on Wednesday to kick off a seven-game home stretch.

Zak Larkin and Jarod Hahn continued their consecutive games reaching base streak to 19 and Paul Trenhaile extending his hitting streak to 11 games over the weekend for the Bulldogs. Hahn led Truman with a .545 average during the series going six of 11 and the team was six of nine in stolen bases.

Sam Ryan paced the Lions with a .417 batting average while driving in a team high six runs.

Logan Siegler and the Bulldogs held on for a 3-2 win in the series opener as the Truman hurler tossed a complete game without allowing an earned run to pick up his second win of the season.

Truman got on the board in the first as Paul Trenhaile drove in his team leading 22nd RBI on a fielderâ??s choice that plated Corbin Williams.

The Bulldogs added one more in the second when a double steal set up another groundout run off the bat of Blake Marino.

Trenhaile would score the third run when he doubled and then came in on an errant throw by the Lionsâ?? first basemen in the sixth inning.

Siegler was on cruise control allowing just two hits in the first five innings. A leadoff double in the sixth didnâ??t faze the Bulldog senior as he promptly struck out the side to send the game into the final inning.

Thomas Wilson started the frame by reaching on an error and the Lions would load the bases with one out.

Leadoff man Dallas Burke made it 3-1 with an RBI groundout and the Lions scored another with a two-out error. Sam Ryan lined out to Joe Emery in left to end the game with the winning run at second base.

Siegler struck out three and walked just one while allowing five hits and two unearned runs. Payton Walker was tagged with the loss for the Lions.

A three-run eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie as the Lions salvaged the doubleheader split in game two.

Southern loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth and Sam Ryan delivered the eventual game-winning RBI with a single up the middle. The Lions would tack on another following a groundout and a third run on sacrifice bunt that resulted in an error.

The Lions led 2-0 after five but the Bulldogs fought back to tie things up.

Zak Larkin reached base in his 18th straight game on an error, advanced to second on a balk and to third on a wild pitch. He would score on a single by Jarod Hahn, who has also reached base in all 18 games.

Hahn went 3-for-4 on the game while Paul Trenhaile continued his 10-game hitting streak with a single in three at bats.

Joe Emery tied the game in the seventh with a two-out double to right that scored Jordan Howe.

Brett Abell fanned a dozen Bulldogs and walked no one in the complete game win for the Lions. Jarrett Eiskina also went the distance allowing six hits and three earned runs but took the loss.

Sam Ryan closed out the series going four of six and drove in five runs as the Lions had to hang on for a 15-8 win on Sunday. MSSU led 9-0 but the â??Dogs battled back to make it 11-7 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

With the Lions up 11-1 after five, T.J. Wood singled and score then drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh to make it 11-3.

In the eighth, three straight walks and a hit by pitch followed by RBI singles from Joe Emery, Mike Monfre and Will Nader closed the Bulldogs to within four however Southern benifited from a bases loaded walk and sent 10 hitters to the plate to answer Trumanâ??s four with four of their own.

Tyler McCreary was the starter for Truman and lasted just an inning and two-thirds and was followed by four other Truman pitchers. Drew Noble was the winner for the Lions going six plus innings.
