Truman soccer advances to semifinals with win over William Jewell

Kristina Weishar's header goal in the 88th minute broke a 1-1 tie and sent the second-seeded Truman women's soccer team into the GLVC semifinals, as the Bulldogs dropped William Jewell 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Bulldog Soccer Park.

Truman (12-3-4) advances a Friday (Nov. 8) semifinal matchup against No. 3 seed UW-Parkside on the Quincy (Ill.) campus.

Match time has not currently been set.

The match held a frenetic pace throughout the 90 minutes, as the Bulldogs and Cardinals (10-8-1) combined for 33 shots 19 on goal on a blustery, cool afternoon.

After the squads went to the intermission scoreless, William Jewell used the diagonal wind to its advantage and scored on a corner kick in the 55th minute to go up, 1-0.

The Bulldogs ratcheted up the pressure, however, and drew even in the 67th minute when Megan Frkovic blasted home a loose ball off a Sally Smith corner kick.

After chances in the waning minutes by both Trisha Shoemaker and Stephanie Williams slid just wide, the Bulldogs finally got the game-winner with 2:26 to play.

Weishar recorded her second goal of the season, heading in a Megan Whitehead cross just below the crossbar to propel the Bulldogs to their 12th win of the season.

Melanie Hunt led all Bulldogs with four shots (three saves), while Shoemaker, Smith and Whitehead all added three shots each. Goalkeeper Emily Bozdeck made seven saves in net.

Truman will be meeting UW-Parkside for the second time this season, as the Bulldogs picked up a 2-1 OT win at home against the Rangers on Sept. 22. ]

UWP defeated Drury 1-0 at home on Sunday afternoon to advance to the semifinals.
