Truman softball headed to NCAA Midwest Regional
INDIANAPOLIS - The Truman State University softball team is going to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the 18th time in school history and fourth season in a row. The Bulldogs picked up the five seed in the Midwest Regional and will take on fourth-seeded Wayne State (Mich). on Thursday at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Softball Field with first pitch set for 12 p.m. That marks the highest seed for the Purple and White since 2014 when they were No. 4.
"I'm thrilled for our players to have the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Tournament," said 11th-year head coach, Erin Brown. "They were very good last weekend with the second-place finish and are playing well right now. We'll work on a few things this week to prepare for the opponents we will face this weekend. Team 45 (45th season of Truman softball) is leaving it's mark on our program's history with this NCAA berth and I couldn't be more pleased with their drive to compete."
In a rematch from the first game of last season's regional, the Bulldogs (39-21) will square off against the No. 22 Warriors (37-13), who lead the all-time series with the Purple and White, 3-2. Most recently, Truman went 4-2 in the GLVC Tournament and made it to the event's finals for the first time in program history. In the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) Tournament, Wayne State went 1-1 and was eliminated by the tournament, champion, Saginaw Valley State in the second round.
The NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament is broken up into a pair of four-team "sub-regional" brackets, which are hosted at separate sites. UMSL's bracket also includes the No. 1 seed Tritons (39-13) and No. 8 seed Kentucky Wesleyan (38-20), which will play at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. The other four-team bracket is at No. 2 seed/sixth-ranked Southern Indiana (41-12) and features No. 3 seed/24th-ranked Saginaw Valley State (35-14), No. 6 seed Indianapolis (33-19) and No. 7 seed Grand Valley State (32-16).
The winners of both the UMSL regional and the Southern Indiana regional will meet in the Midwest Super Regional on May 18-19. That will be a three-game series at a site to be determined. Each of the eight regional winners across the country will then meet at the NCAA Division II College World Series held in Salem, Va. on May 25-29.
