Truman Softball splits with Pittsburg State

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman softball team split a Saturday afternoon home doubleheader with Pittsburg (Kan.) State, winning game one 11-2 in five innings before falling 9-2 in the nightcap.

Cate Simon (O'Fallon, Mo.) led the Bulldogs (16-6, 4-2 MIAA) with five hits in six at-bats, including a grand slam, while Kelsey Bollman (Maquoketa, Iowa) hit .500 on the day with a three-run homerun and two doubles of her own. The Bulldogs hit .340 on the day as a team, while the pitching staff put up a 3.50 ERA.

Truman returns to action next Friday (March 29) when it hosts Fort Hays State at 1:00 pm in Kirksville.

Game 1 Recap â?? W 11-2 (5 inn.) (Box Score):

Truman jumped all over PSU in the opener, piecing together a two-out rally in the first inning to lead 4-0. After the first two batters recorded outs, the Bulldogs got back-to-back singles by Liz Leath (St. Charles, Mo.) and Kristin Grossman (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) before Meredith Kusky (Ballwin, Mo.) coaxed a nine-pitch walk to load the bases. After falling behind in the count 0-2, Simon then fought back and blasted her first career grand slam on a 2-2 pitch to stake the â??Dogs to a 4-0 lead.

After neither team scored in the second, Truman again put up a crooked number in the third to widen the gap. Grossman led off with a walk and advanced to second on a Kusky single. Following Nikki Moss (Kansas City, Mo.) pinch-running for Grossman, Simon singled to left to lead the bases in front of Laura Miller. Miller (Columbia, Mo.) then reached on a fielderâ??s choice that did not produce an out to make the game 5-0. Two batters later, pinch-hitter Whitney Richardson (Troy, Mo.) laced a single up the middle to plate two and building the lead to 7-0. Then, after a pitching change, Bollman greeted the new twirler with a three-run blast to right center, pushing the margin to 10-0. Andrea Klipsch (St. Louis, Mo.) followed with a double before Leath came through with an RBI single up the middle for an 11-0 Bulldog lead.

The 11 run lead was more than enough for Bulldog ace Hannah Washburn (Keokuk, Iowa), as PSU would get two runs in the fifth but could not extend the game beyond the run-rule 11-2 final in five innings. All nine Bulldog starters touched home at least once, with Washburn reaching 10-2 with a complete game, six-hitter.

Game 2 Recap â?? L 9-2 (Box Score):

The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead in the home half of the first when Bollman walked, advanced to second on a sac bunt, moved to third on a flyout to right and came home on a Grossman RBI single.

However, things unraveled in the third when PSU benefitted from an overruled call to place the leadoff hitter on first. After the next two hitters recorded outs, the Gorillas got a walk, an RBI single, another walk and a grand slam to take a four-run lead behind five unearned runs. PSU would add three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, as the Bulldogs never got any serious threats until the seventh when a Leath RBI single plated Bollman for Trumanâ??s second run of the game.

Kindra Henze (Palmyra, Mo.) (3-2) took the loss for Truman, giving up eight runs (three earned) with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
