      Truman State men's tennis beats Emporia State

      The Truman Menâ??s Tennis team ended their season on Friday on a winning note by defeating Emporia State (Kan.) University in the MIAA Postseason Tournament consolation match by a 5-4 score.

      The Bulldogs lost their first round match to Nebraska-Kearney 5-0. The first match of the day was between the fourth seeded Lopers and fifth seeded Bulldogs and the UNK squad took a commanding 3-0 by sweeping through the doubles.

      Just two singles wins were needed for the victory and UNK got them at number four and five singles. Truman fell behind 2-1 in doubles against #6 Emporia State with Patrick Spain and Matt Peterson winning 8-6 at number three doubles. Griffin Smith took number two singles 6-2, 6-4 and Kirk Schlueter and Mike Merchant won in straight sets in the number five and six singles matches. The turning point came in number three as Joe Murphy-Baum won his first set 6-3 but lost 6-4 to Bryson Dabney to force a third-set tie-breaker.

      Murphy-Baum dominated the tie-break as he won 6-0 to clinch the consolation victory for the Bulldogs. Trumanâ??s season comes to an end with a 5-8 overall record.
