Truman State softball drops two to 17th-ranked Fort Hays State
Sat, 30 Mar 2013 04:26:06 GMT — A pair of dominant pitching performances kept the Truman softball offense in check on Friday afternoon, as the 17th-ranked Fort Hays (Kan.) State Tigers shut out the Bulldogs 1-0 and 4-0 in a pair of games at the Truman Softball Complex. The Bulldogs (16-8, 4-4 MIAA) return to action on Saturday by hosting Nebraska-Kearney at 1:00 pm on ??Strike Out Cancer?? afternoon. Game 1 Recap ?? L 1-0 (Box Score):FHSU pitcher Maddie Holub threw a no-hitter and provided her own offense with a solo home run in the third inning to down the Bulldogs 1-0 in the opening game. Truman got a strong outing out of its ace, Hannah Washburn (Keokuk, Iowa, Keokuk), as the junior tossed a complete game five-hitter, with the lone blemish coming on Holub??s shot to left field with two out in the third. Washburn (10-3) struck out seven Tigers and forced 10 flyouts.in lowering her season ERA to 1.93. Laura Miller (Columbia, Mo., Hickman) (hit-by-pitch) and Liz Leath (St. Charles, Mo., Francis Howell Central) (walk) were the only two Bulldogs to reach base in the game. Game 2 Recap ?? L 4-0 (Box Score):Cate Simon (O'Fallon, Mo., Fort Zumwalt South) had a pair of hits and four other Bulldogs tallied base-knocks, but Fort Hays used a first-inning homerun and a two-run third to propel itself to a 4-0 win in game two. Holub again got things going, playing left field in game two and hitting a homerun to right in the top of the first to stake the Tigers to an early lead. Truman, meanwhile, put runners on base against Paxton Duran, but the Tiger pitcher danced out of trouble ?? including a bases-loaded opportunity for the Bulldogs in the sixth - to keep Truman off the board. Kindra Henze (Palmyra, Mo., Palmyra) started and pitched three innings, allowing four earned runs, before Kirsten Krause (St. Louis, Mo., Parkway North) pitched four shutout innings in relief.
