The Lindenwood (Mo.) Lions spoiled the spring home debut of the Truman Tennis teams on a chilly Tuesday afternoon.
The Lion women defeated the Bulldogs 8-1 while the men fell 6-3 in conference action. The teams will be back in action this weekend at home.
In the womenâ??s match, the top doubles team of Maggi Schutte and Kim Birenbaum scored the lone win with an 8-6 triumph over the Lionsâ?? Adela Slovakova and Gloria Marras.
Lindenwood would take the other two doubles matches by scores of 8-3 and 8-6.
Three of the singles matches needed third set tie breaks. Birenbaum rallied to win set two 6-2 but lost in the third 6-1.
Savanah Everett also bounced back after dropping the opening set with a 6-4 win but fell behind in the tie break and lost 10-3.
Finally, Holly Cantalupo won set two 6-4 but was defeated in the tie break.
The women fall to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA. They will face Fort Hays (Kan.) State on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
The tandem of Joe Murphy-Baum and Adam King kept the Lindenwood men from sweeping through the doubles. Murphy-Baum and King edged out Eric Tucoulou and William Hale 9-7 to win the second doubles match.
In singles, Murphy-Baum was locked in a marathon with Johannes Rabenhorst in the number four match.
Murphy-Baum dropped the first set 6-4 but then took number two 6-4 and outlasted Rabenhorst in the third 12-10 for the win.
Griffin Smith won number two singles by a 7-6, 2-6, 11-9 score for the third Truman team point.
The Bulldogs drop to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA.
The men will face Nebraska-Kearney at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
