Maharishi School tennis headed to state
Maharishi School defeated both Grinnell and Pella today to advance to the State finals in Des Moines.
The Pioneers shut out Grinnell 6-0, and then earned a hard fought 5-1 win over a determined Pella squad.
Double winners for the Pioneers were Sam Stickels, Chandre Morales, Solaris Nite, Surya Sawhney, and Girindra Selleck.
Surya Sawhney won the deciding match against Pella, notching a come from behind win over Sam Dykstra, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5. "Surya showed a lot of resilience today," explained the Pioneer coach, Steve Briggs.
"There were times when the match appeared to be slipping away, but Surya's mental resolve made the difference.
Same with our #2 player, Chandre Morales. Surya and Chandre handled the pressure well. They made my day a lot easier."
Next up for the Pioneers is individual state in Waterloo, which begins Friday, May 30th in Waterloo.
The Pioneers qualified singles ace, Sam Stickels, and the doubles team of Surya Sawhney and Solaris Nite.
