OHS track prepares for conference meet

OTTUMWA, Ia. - On Thursday Ottumwa will be heading to Des Moines East for its conference meet.

Both teams have had pretty good seasons accompanied by meet championship trophies. It’s been a few years since either the boys or girls won the conference meet.

Last year the boys were fifth and the girls fourth in the conference meet. This year both sides think they have what it takes to be right near the top.

“If we can walk out of there with 30 points from the field events I think we're gonna be in contention I think. We can run with just about anybody, its gonna be those secret points that you just don't see that's indicator of what place we come in at the conference meet,” said Jim Nickerson, Ottumwa boys track head coach.

“Based on what quikstats is telling us i think we can finish top two. Roosevelt will be there and east will push us a little bit, but based on how we've been performing this year we should get top three at conference,” said Dennis Gilbertson, head coach of the Ottumwa girls track team.

The conference meet starts at 4:30 Thursday. This is the final meet before state qualifying which is May 11th.
