Postseason honors for IHCC recruits

Five members of Indian Hills' 2014 softball recruiting class received postseason honors from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. All five were named to all-state teams and four were also selected for all-district squads.

Nataliah Hopkins of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Mallory Madsen of Solon and Abbey Murphy of state champion Earlham were all first-team all-state choices. Emily Brown from Waverly-Shell Rock was a second-team all-state pick and Alexis Winn of Ottumwa was named third-team all-state. Hopkins, Madsen, Murphy and Brown were also chosen to all-district teams.

Murphy's Earlham team defeated Hopkins' E-B-F squad in the Class 2A state championship game. Madsen's Solon team also made it to the finals in Class 4A where they lost to Dallas Center-Grimes.

Also playing in the state softball tournament was future Warrior Kaylea Rusch, whose Muscatine squad finished fifth in Class 5A.

All six of the Iowa high school players who will join the Indian Hills softball program this fall enjoyed outstanding senior seasons.

Brown batted .362 and slugged 12 doubles and 10 homers while driving in 37 runs for Waverly-Shell Rock.

Hopkins both pitched and hit her team into the state tourney. For the season, she compiled a 25-5 record with a 1.06 ERA and had 162 strikeouts in 199 IP. At the plate, the right-handed hitter posted a .377 average with 11 doubles and three homers with 31 RBIs. She was a member of the state tourney's all-tournament team in Class 2A.

Madsen hit .479 with 45 runs scored and 20 RBIs and was 20-for-22 in stolen base attempts. She was picked for the all-tournament team at the state tourney.

Murphy's .455 batting average as a senior was the fourth year in a row that she hit better than .400. This summer she had six doubles, four triples and six homers, scored 43 runs and knocked in 58 in 35 games. And she was perfect in 11 stolen base tries.

Winn slammed nine home runs and drove in 49 runs for the Ottumwa Bulldogs. She also ripped 14 doubles.

Muscatine's Rusch batted .341 in her senior season, with 19 doubles and 39 RBIs.

The remainer of the 2014 recruiting class for IHCC includes Chelsea Eads and Shannon Finneran from Morrison, Ill., and Kacey Duffield from Fairbanks, Alaska.

One other note: former Indian Hills softball star Lindsey Diehl led her Clarke (Osceola) team to the Iowa Class 3A state title and was named the 3A Coach of the Year.
