Sigourney gets eight to districts, wins team title
Five area teams competed in the Sigourney sectionals for a chance to make it to districts in Pleasantville.
At 106 pounds, the host schools Mason Dye defeats Moravia's Will Martin by major decision 20-12 and is headed to districts as a sectional champ. Martin won is second place match 15-0 over Joel Davis of North Mahaska and he is headed to districts.
At 113 pounds, Van Buren’s Adam Smith gets the pin win over Moravia's Bryce Kaster to finish first and head to district. Kaster still advanced to districts in second place.
Over at 120 pounds, Luke House of Sigourney topped Zac Knapp of Moravia 10-5 but both are headed to districts as first and second place finishers.
Next at 126, Moravia's Casey Clark lost to Tyler Strasser of North Mahaska by fall but he still advances in second place to districts.
At 132 pounds, Zach Hammes of Pekin escaped Nick Ives of Sigourney by decision 10-8. Hammes moves on to districts as sectional champ. Ives then qualified as a second place finisher.
At 138, 2016 State qualifier Nicholas Martin of Moravia is moving on to districts. He topped Caleb Stoltz of Van Buren by decision 9-5. Stoltz would avoid a wrestle back and is headed to districts as a second place qualifier.
At 145, Drake Harbison of Pekin would be the second Panthers qualifier. He topped Cardinals Trey Albert by decision 5-0. Albert then grabbed a fall win over North Mahaska’s Shaun Clark to still advance to district.
Moving to 152, Sawyer Phillips of Pleasantville topped Kaden Baker of Pekin by fall. Baker will still head to districts as a second place qualifier.
At 160, Sigourney’s Alec Schuster lost to Griffen McBride by decision 7-0, but will head to districts in second place.
At 170, Sigourney’s Noah Reeves had an impressive win by fall on Cael Lester of Pleasantville to win the sectional title.
Cardinal would get a qualifier in Austin Bride who finished second by beating Skyler Juhl of Pekin by fall. He then beat Austin Flesher of Pleasantville 14-8 at 182 pounds.
2016 state qualifiers Kaleb Reeves of Sigourney and Quinton Castell of Moravia met at 195 pounds. Reeves topped Castell 16-3 to finished second. Castell still qualifies for districts in second.
At 220, Sigourney got another qualifier. Noah Boender topped Chaz Clark of Pleasantville 3-2 to finish first.
And finally at 285 pounds, Cooper Greiner of Sigourney finished second to make it to districts.
Districts for all three classes start at noon on Saturday, February 11th.
Sigourney finished ahead of Pleasantville as a team 225 to 141.5. Both teams advance to the regional team dual next week, February 7th.
