Truman State's Alyssa Hajduk named GLVC Pitcher of the Week
As part of the Truman State University softball team's Sunday sweep over No. 24 Saginaw Valley State in the 2018 home openers, Alyssa Hajduk was automatic out of the bullpen in both victories. In four and two-thirds innings of work, Hajduk didn't allow a single run, surrendered just one hit and earned the win in both games to improve to 5-1 on the year.
Because of that, she was named GLVC Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her career as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.
"Alyssa did an exceptional job this week," said head coach, Erin Brown. "She came into high-pressure situations and did a great job executing her pitches and getting our defense off the field."
With the two wins, Hajduk has already tied her season total from a year ago when she went 5-7. This past weekend, the Shorewood, Ill. native struck out three batters and walked four with an opponent batting average of just .071.
Since joining the conference prior to the 2014 season, the Bulldogs have now been accredited with Player of the Week seven times (Christa Reisinger - 3, Lex Van Nostrand - 2 and Andrea Klipsch - 2) and Pitcher of the Week six times (Kindra Henze four times and Lauren Dale once).
In the 5-4 game-one victory, Hajduk relieved Dale in the top of the sixth with two runs already in and just one out recorded.
The 5-5 hurler then recorded back-to-back outs and cruised the rest of the way for 3.2 innings of one-hit, shutout ball. In the nightcap, the starter, Nicolette Simpson, gave way to Hajduk to open the seventh and the left-handed hurler faced just one hitter over the minimum in a scoreless frame.
Next up on the schedule, Truman will open GLVC play on Thursday at Illinois Springfield with first pitch in game one set for 2 p.m.
