George Michael dies at 53, says publicist

Singer George Michael died at age 53, according to his publicist.

Michael lived outside of London in Oxfordshire and "passed away peacefully at home," his publicist said in a statement released Sunday night.

"It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” the statement read.

"The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."

Local police indicated there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

George Michael rose to stardom in the 1980's as part of the duo Wham! Later he went on to have a successful career as a solo performer with numerous hit songs. Among his best known work is the song, Faith, the title track his first solo album. His first release, Careless Whisper, the title track for the Wham! album, has sold over 1.4 million copies.

Many of Michael's fans are listening with sadness to one of his famous Wham! songs, Last Christmas.
