Each year VFW Post 2508 hosts a Veterans Day Celebration in honor of those who have served past or present in the United States Military.

The ceremony on Sunday, started with Chaplain Larry Page of American Legion Post 20 by announcing distinguished guests, Blue and Gold Star families, visiting dignitaries and veteran organizations.

"We have this event every year and this is the 100th year that the guns fell silent during World War I and we come every year and do this same thing to honor all the fallen soldiers and all the soldiers who are guarding our country right now, " said Commander Mitchell Welte.

One of the main speakers for the event was Lieutenant Colonel David M. Ward who recently moved to Kirksville in July with his wife Heather and their three children.

"Very honored and very humbled just coming to the area a couple months ago incorporating into the community. It's a great honor to attend for one and secondly to be the speaker to be able to recognize the veterans from World War II, Vietnam and modern battles to recognize their service," said Ward.

Ward is also a Military Science professor at Truman State University.

Whether someone is serving or has served, the legacy is never forgotten.
