Amateur radio field day helps prepare for emergencies
OTTUMWA, IOWA —
Ottumwa’s Amateur Radio Club is participating in the national HAM Radio Field Day event.
Saturday and Sunday, club members will make contact with other radio stations across the country.
Club Vice President Paul Cartwright says the event helps with emergency preparedness. Amateur radio can be extremely helpful during major events like hurricanes and tornadoes.
“When we step in to help it’s more than just communication. We’re there to do whatever needs to be done, whether it’s setting up radios or doing logistics to get equipment for one place or another,” said Cartwright.
The club has set up their facilities at the Wapello County 4H Expo Grounds. They’ll be there until Sunday afternoon.
