Southeast Iowa authorities ask for help locating escaped prisoner

The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public's help in locating an escaped prisoner.

Nelson Mendoza, 31, of Iowa and California, was receiving medical treatment at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center early Sunday morning, May 20, when he escaped custody.

Mendoza has been held in the Wapello County Jail for Willful Injury, Assault, Interference with Official Acts and Possessing Contraband in a Correctional Facility.

He was last seen just north of the Ottumwa Regional Health Center when he entered a wooded area, and authorities lost contact.

Mendoza is a Hispanic male 5’07”, weighing 200 pounds, brown hair and brown eyes. Last seen wearing tan shorts and black and white Wapello County Jail shirt. He has a Bulldog tattoo on his right forearm.
