Bloomfield considers wind energy
BLOOMFIELD, Iowa —
Another Heartland community is considering using wind power.
In 2011, the Henry County town of New London built a wind turbine to power the town. Now an energy entrepreneur wants Bloomfield to do the same.
The aptly named Tom Wind of Wind Utility Consulting pitched the idea to the community Tuesday night. Wind told the group, which included city leaders, a turbine usually makes good economic sense.
"Based on the estimates that we've looked at, there should be some long term savings with this wind turbine,” Wind said. “We think there will be, but there’s always a little bit of uncertainty because you don’t know how much the coal, the oil or natural gas would’ve cost had you just continued using that."
If built, the Bloomfield turbine would be slightly larger than New London’s.
Interim Public Works Director Chris Ball said no decision has been made on the project, but that Tuesday night's meeting was a good start.
