OTTUMWA, Iowa — Wapello County crews responded to a house fire on 9002 194th Ave. between Ottumwa and Blakesburg at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
The home was on a hill, above the road. The flames and smoke could be spotted from the distance, even from near Highway 34.
Several firefighters from Wapello County, Blakesburg and Eddyville stopped to provide aid.
Ashes were blown away from the burning home and into the surrounding areas.
After more than one hour of exhaustive work, it seemed firefighters had the fire under control.
Wapello County’s Fire Department chief said the house burned to the ground.
It is not known if anyone was in the home when the fire started or if anyone was taken to the hospital. The cause of the fire hasn’t been disclosed.
