Donation 'crew' keeping Macon warm
MACON, Mo. —
Johnny Contratto held his 2nd annual "Johnny's Crew: Coat and Blanket Drive" in Macon, Missouri, on Thursday.
Contratto and his "crew" spent their day passing out free, gently used coats and blankets to the community.
"I do whatever I can to help as many people as I can, but when I was only one person it was kind of hard," Contratto said.
The coat and blanket drive began when Contratto wanted to donate his used coats last year. After reaching out to friends, family and the Macon community, his drive totaled 75 coats and blankets. This year he has over 150 items to give away to those in need.
"As a community, everybody helping everybody is what it's all about," Contratto said.
A lot of the donations are anonymous. Those that are left over will be given to a donation station in Bevier, Missouri.
Friends, who are supporting him with the event location and on-site food, are not surprised he has taken on the effort.
"[He's] constantly doing things for the community, for the public. He would give somebody his shirt of his back, if they asked," said his friend John Taylor, who served items from his food truck throughout the day.
