Driver accused of killing Drakesville boy faces more charges

DRAKESVILLE, Iowa (AP) -- The southeast Iowa driver accused of striking and killing an Amish boy with a pickup truck near Drakesville in June is now facing additional charges.

Terry Petary, 41, of Drakesville is now charged with Causing Serious Injury by Vehicle, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Leaving the Scene of an Accident That Causes Death and Failure to Report an Accident.

He was already charged with Vehicular Homicide.

Petary killed Merlin Beechy, 9, when he struck the boy and his brother, Nathan, 12, around 10 p.m. on June 24 near 180th Street West of Drakesville.

Petary and the pickup he was driving were later located in West Grove, Iowa.

Nathan Beechy was treated at a Des Moines hospital and later released.

Petary remains in custody on $20,000 cash-only bond.

His arraignment is set for August 31, 2018.
