Driver using cell phone rear-ends Heartland school bus
Mediapolis, Iowa —
A Heartland school bus received minor damage Thursday morning after being rear-ended.
According to the Des Moines County Sheriff's office, the accident happened just before 8 a.m. on Hwy. 61 near Mediapolis.
Investigating deputies discovered that a Mediapolis school bus was south bound on US 61 and stopped at 21357 Hwy. 61 to board two students. The school bus was at a complete stop, red stop sign arm and flashing red lights on to signal stop for all vehicles.
At that time, a 2005 GMC Envoy driven by Elizabeth Sue Hahn, of Morning Sun, was also south bound on US 61 behind the school bus.
Hahn reportedly acknowledged her cell phone and struck the school bus from behind at 55 MPH. Neither Hahn of any of the students suffered any injuries.
Hahn's vehicle was totaled. The school bus received minor, functional damage. A uniform citation was issued to Ms. Hahn for failure to stop.
Southbound traffic at the accident scene was blocked for approximately one hour during the investigation and clean up.
